Chamber Meeting Minutes
Jan. 2008 (Annual Meeting 2007)
Feb. 2008
March 2008

2007 Annual Dinner Minutes (January 10, 2008)
The Traer Chamber of Commerce held its Annual Dinner/Meeting for the 2007 year on Jan. 10, 2008 at the Traer Memorial Building. Social hour was held from 6 to 7 p.m., with dinner at 7 p.m. followed by the meeting. There were 58 reservations, with 47 actually attending, representing 24 businesses. ’ÄúRock and Roll on Second Street’Äù was the ’Äútheme’Äù for the dinner. A tabletop display featured 2007 activities and promotions, and copies of the Annual Report were distributed. Hor d’Äôoeuvres served prior to the meal were provided by Farmers Savings Bank & Trust ’Äì Traer.
Co-President Molly Clubb welcomed all to the evening’Äôs activities, and the invocation was given by the Rev. Rick Vesely of Traer United Presbyterian Church. The meal was catered by Traer Super Market and prime rib was served. (Jeff Walters used FCCLA students and his own employees as wait staff.)
Co-President Stacey Schmitt called the meeting to order following the meal. She introduced and thanked the present board members, which included Shirley Crawford, Weekenders Fashions, Past President; Josh Kraushaar, Bauch Law Office, Vice President; Carri Holst, Joe Morris State Farm Insurance; Robert Lee, Dreamland Productions; Kari Groth, Staker Furniture; Ellen Young, Traer Community Betterment, Secretary/Treasurer. Serving part of the year were Gayle Boerm of Bottomline Strategies, and Sandy Wilson, Whispering Pines Gifts and Decor. Amy Jantzen of the Traer Star-Clipper, was named to fill Boerm’Äôs term on the board.
New businesses for 2007 included Simply Blooming with Lisa Eikamp as owner; Jokers Iron Legend, with Tom and Cindy Weida as owners; Winding Stairs Cafe, with Anthony Duke and Karen Newhope as owners; and Traer Fitness Center with Bill and Marcia Dedic as owners. Dedics and Dukes were present and were introduced. Also introduced were Dr. Matthew Ulven and his wife, Julie. Dr. Ulven is the new primary physician at Covenent Clinic in Traer.
Guests Mayor Russell and Irma Drinovsky were also introduced.
Stacey reported on the 2007 activities of the Chamber. And thanks were given to Terry Timmons and his crew of helpers for all the work at Taylor Park with the Christmas Lighting project, and to TMU for the work in replacing bulbs on building rooftops.
Josh Kraushaar discussed the new dues structure, which took effect with 2008 dues. He discussed the rationale behind the raise in rates, and the advantages the board wants to offer members with increased funds available.
Josh also discussed amending the by-laws, as proposed to the members in mailings. The by-laws were last amended in 1985, he reported. He pointed out several of the changes which would take place. A motion by Jared Bauch, seconded by Carri Holst to accept the amendments, passed unanimously.
Ellen led the election process, with the Board of Directors nominating three for the open director seats: Kim Banes of Scrapmania, Dahn Kennedy of AWE Service, and Anthony Duke of Winding Stairs Cafe. There being no nominations from the floor, a motion was made by Rick Vesely, seconded by Jared Bauch to cease nominations and to cast a unanimous ballot for those nominated. Carried.
Directors eligible for the position of Vice President included Amy Jantzen of the Traer Star-Clipper; Kari Groth of Staker Furniture, and Robert Lee of Dreamland Productions. Kari Groth declined to be considered for that position. A secret ballot was held, with business representatives (one vote per business) voting for Amy Jantzen as Vice President.
Stacey thanked Shirley Crawford for her four years of service on the Board of Directors, serving as President in 2006. She was presented with a plaque of appreciation.
Three Outstanding Service Awards for 2007 were presented. Robert Lee presented the Award to David Papesh. Kari Groth presented the award to Jeff and Angie Jacobs, and Carri Holst presented the award to Tom and Linda McDermott.
Josh Kraushaar, incoming president, gave his remarks, complimenting the community of Traer, and commenting on why he had chosen Traer to make his home. He then gave his aims for 2008, including establishing better communications, better planning of activities, and growth of scope for the Chamber.
Thanks were given to Jeff Walters and his crew for the delicious meal.
There being no further business to come before the Chamber, a motion was made by Josh, seconded by Stacey to adjourn the meeting at 8:55 p.m.

Chamber Board Meeting Minutes from February 6, 2008:
The Traer Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors met Wednesday noon, Feb. 6, at Sunnyside Tavern & Cafˆ©. Present were: Josh Kraushaar, Amy Jantzen, Robert Lee, Dahn Kennedy and Ellen Young.
A motion by Amy, seconded by Robert to approve minutes of Annual Dinner Meeting Jan. 10 and January and February financial reports. Carried. Income from the Annual Dinner/Meeting was $672, with expenses of $1,006.70, for a Chamber cost of $334.70.
A motion by Robert, seconded by Amy to send a $25 Chamber Gift Certificate to Pastor Pete Hoggland, who played Santa Claus in the park during Holiday Happenings. Ellen will send, with a thank-you.
Ellen gave a verbal report on the status of the gift certificate fund. A motion by Josh, second by Robert, to set up a separate checking account for the gift certificate fund, with both Ellen and Diane able to write gift certificates from that account. Carried. Ellen will work out with Diane. The board appreciates Diane Kostlan’Äôs work with the gift certificate project over the years.
It was reported that the Business After Hours activity in March will be held at Jokers Iron Legend, with Traer Fitness Center the possible site for June.
Following discussion of several points, Josh made a motion, seconded by Robert, to proceed with a six month contract with Radio Station KZAT for 30 minutes of commercials per month, to feature various Chamber businesses (those that have paid their dues). The contract also calls for a bi-weekly interview promotion of activities in the community, at no added cost. Contract cost to the Chamber is $300 per month, for six months, or $1,800. Josh will contact KZAT to set up specifics. Motion carried, with Josh, Robert and Dahn voting yes, and Amy voting no. Amy suggested money should be spent locally, and said the Chamber had never discussed any such long term contract for advertising with the Traer Star-Clipper newspaper (a Traer Chamber member).
Discussion about the 2008 Car Cruise centered on possible dates for that event, but nothing was decided. Josh will head that committee this year for the Chamber. Possible committee members include Mike McKinney of Traer Municipal Utilities; Joe Roy of True Builders; Jeff Walters of Traer Super Market; Jay Owens of L.L.Owens Insurance; Justin Waller, and others. Plans are to expand the Cruise with changes and additions. Ellen will check on Corn Carnival dates, so no conflict will arise there.
Josh named Stacey Schmitt to head the Gals and Pals Committee, with Dahn Kennedy to assist with that, along with Shirley Crawford, Molly Clubb, and others yet to be named. Robert suggested the speaker be chosen, and the theme of the day be fitted to the speaker’Äôs topic.
Tony Duke has closed the Winding Stairs Cafˆ©. Tony was recently elected to the Chamber board, and this closing will leave a vacancy on the board. If you are interested in serving the Chamber on the board of directors, please contact Josh at Bauch Law Office, or any one of the board members.
Action needs to be taken to initiate the community’Äôs new Welcome to Traer signs on the outskirts of town. Sandy Wilson and Shirley Crawford are heading that up. Josh will investigate further on how the board can help with that project.
A chairperson is needed for the Holiday Happenings committee.
The next board meeting was set for Wednesday, March 5 at Jokers Iron Legend. As always, board meetings are open for any Chamber member to attend. Input is appreciated.
A motion was made by Robert, seconded by Dahn, to adjourn the meeting at 1:40 p.m. Carried.

March 5, 2008 Minutes:
The Traer Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors met March 5 at Jokers Iron Legend. Present were: Josh Kraushaar, Amy Jantzen, Kari Groth, Bob Lee, Stacey Schmitt, Shirley Crawford, Macey Calderwood, Kim Banes, and Secretary Ellen Young.
Due to the resignation of President Josh Kraushaar, Past President Stacey Schmitt presided.
Amy Jantzen, Vice President, stated she was reluctant to assume the office of President at this time, citing her inexperience on the board. She made the motion that Past President Shirley Crawford be named President to fill out Josh’Äôs term. That motion was seconded by Stacey, with no opposition. Carried.
No corrections or additions were made to the February meeting minutes.
Stacey said she is working on development of a budget for the Chamber year.
Amy suggested that since we are not holding the Home Show this year, the Chamber have some activity in conjunction with the Winding Stairs Festival.
Ellen displayed the ’ÄúFirst Baby’Äù Contest basket of prizes. Shirley Crawford will make that presentation, with Ellen to coordinate with the winning family, Scott and Jana Monat and baby Maxon James Monat.
Chocolate hearts were sold to benefit the Traer Theatre, and a photo will be taken of that check presentation.
Diane Kostlan and Ellen are working on changes in the Chamber Gift Certificate system at Farmers Savings Bank. Following discussion, it was agreed by the board that the certificates should have the wording printed on them, ’ÄúThis certificate expires six months after date of issue.’Äù Also, they would like a numbering system, so we can keep track of what is yet to be cashed.
Discussion about the KZAT Radio contract for advertising Traer, which was approved at the February meeting: Josh reported he had not entered into the contract with them. It was noted that the owners are subject to a Sheriff’Äôs Sale on land where their antenna sits. Keri Groth voiced the opinion that no contract should be signed with that station because of their potential financial problems. Stacey reviewed radio proposals from other stations, and Robert will check and update prices from a Marshalltown station.
Business After Hours for March/April will be held at Jokers Iron Legend, with the date to be announced.
City Wide Garage Sales will be held May 3, with business card size ad space on the flyer to be given free to businesses, since the Chamber sponsors the sale. Amy and Ellen will work on this project.
Josh expressed his appreciation to everyone for welcoming him to Traer. He enjoyed being part of the Chamber and its activities, and the board expressed appreciation for his efforts the past two years.
He is moving to Williamsburg for professional reasons.
’ÄúCelebrate Spring’Äù postcards will be handed out before April 1, and drawings for 4 $25 gift certificates will be held May 11.
Amy reported on her conversations with Mike McKinney about the Car Cruise. The board approved holding the Cruise Saturday, Aug. 2. Many changes will be made to update and improve the Cruise. Amy will be the board representative on that committee, with several Chamber members volunteering also. Theme for the Cruise will be ’ÄúOut of the Clouds.’Äù
The Gals and Pals event will be a little later, with the date set for Oct. 18. The committee will meet March 12 at noon at Scrapmania, with Stacey, Shirley and Dahn volunteering to head that group. Shirley suggested ’ÄúHandbag Holiday,’Äù for the theme.
Holiday Happenings and the changes needed there, will be discussed at the next meeting.
Macey Calderwood of NuCara Pharmacy was welcomed, with a motion made by Amy, seconded by Dahn, approving Macey to take the place of Tony Duke on the board of directors. Carried.
Dahn talked about the Easter Egg Hunt scheduled for 9 a.m. March 22 at Taylor Park, with a group of volunteers in change of that event. Businesses may include coupons to give children, to be redeemed at their place of business that day.
The traer.com website is up and running.
The next meeting was set for Wednesday, April 2 at Scrapmania, with a brown bag lunch.
